Bitting the Habit

I have a small confession to make. I have a bad habit. I just can't seem to leave hang nails alone. I bite and pick at the sides of my nails. Sometimes it can get quite bad but I can't seem to stop. I've done this ever since I was young. In fact I used to chew my nails but my Dad really hated that habit and would slap my hand every time he spotted me doing it. I'm glad that he stopped me from biting my nails, however the habit only switched to the edges and hang nails. As long as I had nice nails that weren't chewed and bitten off he didn't notice.

Now, many years later (I won't say exactly how many) I still can't seem to stop. I know it looks bad. I know it sometimes can be painful but still I continue. As a side note, this is what sin looks like in our lives. It is ugly, it hurts us, it causes more problems than it solves but still we can't seem to do the right thing.

There have been a few times where I have attempted to give up this nasty habit but obviously to no avail. I have noticed that when I wear nail polish it holds me off a bit. I want to keep the polish nice and unchipped so try to avoid chewing at the edges of it. So it seems the obvious solution would be to always wear nail polish. The one flaw with this was that for 8 years I worked as a waitress. Nail polish was not allowed for food safety purposes. I was also never much of a finger nail polish person. Toes I did all the time but I've never gotten used to seeing colours on my fingers. I also don't think I do a very good job of getting an even coat and I would also like my fingers to somewhat match what I'm wearing and that just seems like a lot of work, changing the polish all the time.

I have decided though that it's time for a change. I'm going to give kicking this habit a good try and to do that I will be regularly painting my nails. Maybe this will help me become more accomplished at using my right hand precisely (I'm left handed). It's also helped me to create positive change before by blogging about it. If it worked before hopefully it will again. I suppose it makes me more accountable. So now you know and can hold me to it. Maybe this time I'll kick the habit for good.

  1. Rachel - I'm not an all-the-time hangnail biter but occasionally I sure am (depends on the hangnail!) Keep an eye on Groupon and other sites for gel nails. I had them done last year once and they don't chip at all and feel amazing. They're really expensive usually but we got a coupon rate and I loved it.

  2. Thanks for the tip! I think I would love those but yes, the price could be a bit much because I think I have mentioned before I'm CHEEP! I will keep my eye out though.
