Foster the Posture
I have been trying to think of an appropriate goal for the next 90 days. During the next 90 days however, there are a few things that are up in the air. One thing is the appointment I have with a specialist about the possibility of having a breast reduction. There is potential that I could have surgery some time in the foreseeable future. This has also shifted some of my focus towards my posture. Since I know that having surgery will not automatically fix my posture and cause the hunch in my back to disappear I made an appointment with a chiropractor. I think this has made my goal a little clearer. When I had my first appointment x-rays were done and from looking at those and a profile picture I have been able to see what's causing the problems with my back. It seems the base of my spine curves in to much and between my shoulders and the bottom of my neck curve out to much. Most notably there is one vertebrae that is starting to stick out quite far, hence the "hunch back". My neck is also far to straight. Who knew? It's supposed to have a slight backwards curve. And here I thought a straight neck was a good thing.
Normally I'm not such a big fan of chiropractors. No offense if you are one. It's just that for the most party I they try to get you to go so often that it starts to do more harm than good. This one doesn't seem like he will push that to much and he has also been giving me exercises and stretches to do that will help to keep the alignment over longer and longer periods of time so I can phase out the adjustments. He also recommended that I get one of those cervical pillows to get my neck used to the correct position. So far I've had 2 adjustments and I'm pleased that I can already notice some improvement. I'm also enjoying the stretches and exercises. They are definitely making a difference in how long I'm able to maintain proper positions.
I have been thinking about my posture for a while now and for at least 3 months I've been attempting to adjust how I stand and sit. It's just felt SO AWKWARD! I'll stand with my shoulders back, my heck up and my head straight and it feels like I'm leaning backwards with my head in a strange position. However, if I look at that same stance in the mirror it looks completely normal. These adjustments are helping me to feel a little more normal in the correct posture. Now my only concern is that this will work so well my problem will be "fixed" and I'll no longer be able to get the reduction surgery covered by OHIP. Maybe I should have waited until after the specialist appointment. lol
