The Nose Knows
After a year and a half of waiting I finally had my ear, nose and throat specialist appointment today. I was trying to figure out when I made the appointment today and I believe it was May 2011. At that point the date I had set was January 26th of this year but it just happened to end up being the same day my breast reduction surgery was scheduled for. When I called to change it the date they gave me was in July, on the only week of family holidays we would have this year. I told her that day wouldn't work so her next option was today, September 6th. That's a little bit of a jump from July but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's not like my issue is anything major anyways but it just goes to show the shortage of doctors and specialist in Canada. I won't get into a rant about all that though.
My issue is that I have a deviated septum. It's been like this for who knows how long but it's been bothering me more and more. When I saw the specialist today she confirmed that is it quite deviated and that the problems I am having with my sinuses are all "mechanical". This means all the treatments, medications and nasal steroids the doctors have been prescribing me do just about nothing. She said my breathing is quite blocked from this. Though I can adjust for it somewhat and make accommodations while I'm awake sleeping is a different matter. This is why I'm snoring more and more. Possibly it's a factor in my poor sleeping habits. The only fix is surgical. The complications are minimal and the recovery is fairly short so I guess I'll be having another surgery this year. The first date she gave me was a little too early. It was only a few days before my cousins wedding and since I really didn't want to show up with my nose packed with gauze I'll be waiting a little longer. Funny how appointment dates take almost a year and a half but surgery I can have in 2 weeks if I like. It looks like I'll be waiting until November or early December but all in all not a bad wait. Plus I've been living with it for a long time anyway.
Out of curiosity I took a look at approximately how much having this surgery would cost if I lived in the States. The answer I found was between $2,000-$5,000! Wow, I'm glad I live in Canada!
