Chocolate


I participated in a writing workshop this summer and the first thing we did as an introduction was a writing prompt about chocolate. This was my submission. It had been a while since I had written anything using a particular prompt. I enjoyed getting into the flow of writing creatively again.




 One dark, rich and earthy
One white, sweet and buttery
Different in every way
Yet named the same
The dark, flavour subtle
Sits unmelting
I stroke it with my tongue
Turn it over, coax the flavour out
There is depth
A gentle smoky sweetness
Nuts, coffee and warm seats by the fire in winter
Comfort
An invitation to stay longer
Linger, settle in.
The White
It seems to start melting before it even hits my tongue

Silky smoothness envelops me
Coating my mouth and throat as I swallow
It’s summer
Bright, light and cool
A refreshing walk on the beach
Toes stretching out into the calm water
I’m drawn more to the dark
Always the dark
The deep nuanced flavours
Subtly different with every bite
Strange that these two should share the same name
Both chocolate but opposite
Each have their uses
More suited for a different application, situation, mood
Most people prefer someplace in the middle
A milk that balances the overt sweetness and the earthy tannins
It’s the same with people
All labeled with the same name, human
So many subtle and overt differences
Bright, sweet, deep, rich, smooth, cool, earthy, bland, warm, nutty, light inviting, flavourful, complex
Some leave a waxy taste in your mouth
Some leave you wanting more
Draw you into their warm embrace
Some just aren’t your flavour
But are just right for someone else
All of us are searching for our favourite flavour

There is a petition making its way around stating Tell Harper: Hands off our reproductive rights.   This is because on the 26 th of April (today) Stephen Harper is apparently going to allow Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth to put forward a motion in the House of Commons which clearly opens the possibility of re-criminalizing abortion.   I have read this motion, Motion 312 and it is one asking that a committee of the House be appointed and directed to review the declaration in Subsection 223(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada which states that a child becomes a human being only at the moment of complete birth.   This committee would be asked to submit their findings after 10 months on what medical evidence exists to demonstrate that a child is or is not a human being before the moment of complete birth. Choose Your Own Adventure

When you are a kid people always ask you, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  If you asked my daughter last week she would have said hairdresser, or taking care of butterflies in a butterfly conservatory.  This week she announced that she thinks she wants to be a teacher, like Ms. Winfield (she's attempting to be teachers pet I believe).  When I was little there was a while that I wanted to be a Dentist.  Yep, you heard me right.  Dentist.  I'm not really sure why that was something I aspired to.  I think I remember reading somewhere that Dentists are the most universally hated people.  That desire faded as I got older, and most likely had more dental work done.  lol  As I finished high school it caused a sort of panic.  I had no idea!  I enrolled in a one year general knowledge program at a Bible College and hoped that maybe I would gain some direction.  After that year I thought maybe counseling would be a good option for me so after a year of working to sav

The Friend Scam

Yesterday I got a friend invite from a senior that I know that lives in the village where my mom works.  She is a sweet lady and I always think it's super cool when seniors are tech savvy and using Facebook.  She then proceeded to use the chat function to start up a conversation.  I was happy to have a little chat with her but it quickly turned strange.  She started off by mentioning the the marriage of Mark Zuckerberg.  Once again, I thought it was unusual for a senior to be interested in that sort of pop culture news but I grinned and thought it was cute.  She started to tell me that in honor of the marriage they are picking random profiles and giving away $90,000.  I start to worry.  Things like this instantly ring bells of cation for me and I am concerned that this lovely lady is going to get taken in a scam.  My conversation with her continues and the wording and content becomes even odder.  This person isn't talking in the method I would expect and isn't interested
