Musical Magic
There is something amazing and magical about music. It has the power to somehow with words and sounds express an emotion far better when put together than either one can do on their own. Listening to a song that touches your heart can do so many things. It can change your mood, making you either happy when you are sad, sad when you are happy or enhancing the feelings you experience at the moment. Songs can remind you of a moment in time, a relationship you have or even express what you are feeling far better than you could.
I must confess I'm a lyrics girl. I love the poetry in a good song. I love the way the voice can melodiously add power to those words. I love a song I can sing along to and really get behind. My husband however, is a music guy. He plays bass and guitar, he has a far better grasp on the music side of songs than I and in a lot of cases he doesn't really "hear" the lyrics. It is through our relationship that I have gained a better perspective on the music side of songs. Now I'm finding I will hear the different parts a lot more clearly and I can pick out the individual instruments a lot better than before. Some songs can have a fantastic musical quality to them, others can have great lyrics and an amazing voice behind them. What makes a song truly magical is when it has both.
Music is such a personal thing though! A song that might really draw one person in someone else might hate, not even taking into account musical genres. I for one am mostly an alt rock type girl, but I do have a fairly diverse taste in styles. I did happen to hear enough bad country music while growing up though to pretty much totally turn me of of that one though.
There is just something about a song that is put together well that just touches the sole and those songs are not always the ones that get popular enough to be played on the radio. Quite often I will get an album from a band with a song or two that I have heard and soon will discover that what I think is there "best" song is one that doesn't ever "see the light of day." That's when I really think a band is good. That's when I know they should stand the test of time and their music will still sound great in 10-20 years when styles and instrumentation have changed.
There have been quite a few times in my life when people have told me that they really love a band that I introduced them too. There is something bonding about loving the same music as well. You feel a comradory with someone that appreciates those same elements you do. It also makes me very happy to be able to spread the word about something I love and have other people like it too. I love getting the word out about a good band because if people are listening to them and supporting that music that band just might be able to stick around and make more. So maybe my spreading the word might be more of a selfish act. I just want to hear more from that band.
This leads me to a bit of a musical prediction for this year. I have been hearing a song on the radio from Imagine Dragons, decided to give the whole album a listen and haven't stopped listening since. I think I like every song they have done, even the EPs. I just can't...stop...listening (and singing along and dancing around my kitchen). My husband thinks this song is a little tooooooo happy for his liking but for me that's just the point. If you want to feel just a little bit happier today I suggest you give it a listen and maybe you will be like me and won't be able to stop.
